A very skilful starter recipe. Without adding actress spices, this comes out kind of banal. I added garlic, peppercorn and information technology turned out great: the meat was very tender and the veggies came out perfectly cooked as well. I'll be making this again soon.
04/26/2006
This was great! I made it even more special past calculation the peppercorn spice packet that was packaged with the brisket I used (actually, I call up information technology would have been very bland without it). My brisket was only iii lbs., so I cooked it only three hours. Y'all will know it'due south ready when y'all insert a fork, the meat comes up easily. I used fewer ingredients (added the last 20-thirty minutes of cooking): i onion, about 15 infant carrots, ten new potatoes (cut in wedges), and simply 1 head of cabbage. I served it with 'Irresistible Irish Soda Staff of life' from this site. The 2d time I fabricated this, I used a irksome cooker. Put the meat, seasoning packet on top of it, onion wedges, and poured in 1/2 loving cup water. Cooked on low for vi hours. Took the meat out (leaving the onions and goop), added the potatoes (cut in wedges), then carrots, so cabbage, and cooked on high for iii hours. Perfect! Wow, what a great Irish meal! Thanks for the recipe!

This recipe is excellent. I got a "corned beef" brisket, only difference that information technology came with a seasoning packet yous add to the boiling water. Follow this recipe's cooking time is primal to a very tender meat! Information technology was cold and rainy out, I made some cornbread to go with it! A smashing success!!!

My family actually enjoyed my yearly St. Patty'southward day corned beef dinner this twelvemonth! They fifty-fifty asked for seconds. I'thousand keeping this recipe for sure. I did make two tiny changes to this recipe - I added the seasoning packet as other users have washed and I also poured a bottle of beer over the roast before adding the water to cover. Yum, Yum, Yum! I could eat this every week! (post notation on Aug. 5, 2008 - I have made this iii more than times since March! My family unit actually requests this!)
04/04/2007
This is the best corned beefiness recipe! Information technology'southward so simple and good. My husband is always ready to eat this corned beef. I serve information technology with a horseradish foam sauce: 1/2 Sour cream, 1/2 mayo, 2 tablespoons horseradish sauce and one tablespoon dried parsley. Combine ingredients and let flavors alloy in the refrigerator.

This brings back skilful memories of childhood. I cooked this the twenty-four hours before I was going to swallow it. When I put the meat into a storage container, I ladeled about an inch of cooking liquid into the container, to keep the meat moist, which worked beautifully. I had a smaller piece of corned beef, and then I decreased the cooking fourth dimension some, and merely used one head of cabbage. Based on the way everything cooked I would put the potatoes nether the cabbage. So they, too, would have that wonderful corned beefiness flavor. I was feeling sort of homesick for this dinner, so I am grateful to have constitute the recipe.
03/05/2008
I accept been making corned beefiness dinners this manner for years! I ever use the seasoning packet that comes with the beefiness, use the broth over the vegetables, and sprinkle a little malt vinegar over them. A side of horseradish or mustard for dipping the meat goes well likewise!
x/24/2006
Excellent, easy, 1 pot meal. Sour Cream on the side makes the meat taste out of this earth. Boiling in a pot really makes the deviation;do not effort to cook in a crock pot unless you have at least 10-12 hours.
03/05/2006
Succulent! Reminded me of what my mom used to make when nosotros were growing up. My husband loved it and fifty-fifty my little ones gobbled it up. I even got my pickiest child to endeavour carrots this night! He loves the corned beef the about, though. Thanks for sharing, we'll be making this once again!
03/18/2005
Wonderful! So piece of cake and then delicious! I used my biggest stockpot for this and it turned out great. I added parsnips along with the other vegetables.... really yummy!
03/sixteen/2011
I found the cooking time to be likewise much. Everything was overdone......
03/15/2010
Wonderful! But every bit others have said - meat falls apart with the long boiling. I did use the bottle of beer, and added the spice packet, and DID Non rinse the meat. The package says not to, otherwise y'all wash away all the seasonings. I think that's why some people have thought information technology was bland. Somehow the au jus makes the cabbage nearly buttery, and also good. 18 month one-time girl had thirds on meat, and as well ate the cabbage, potatoes and carrots!
03/24/2010
I don't know if was the corned beef itself or the way it was cooked, but it was not salty at all. I think that layering the cabbage and potatoes on top made a differance. Hubby loved it and had leftovers in his lunch adjacent solar day. One thing I did differant was take the meat out to remove any fatty on it. Then I patted about 2 tablespoons of brownish carbohydrate on acme of the meat then put information technology in the oven (350) until the sugar bubbled. That is from my sister's recipe, then I let the meat absurd earlier slicing it.
03/16/2012
this is THE authentic recipe that my aunt shioban has ever fabricated and it was passed down from the family...she still lives in ireland so i trust her...lol...simply my family unit adds 3/4-1" cut carrots (ever on diagonal as my aunt says they are sweeter that way...and btw, we always have bubble and squeak the next mean solar day if in that location are leftovers...merely we donot add ham or bacon or whatever spices...just dice all the ingredients (including corned beef) and put in a hot bandage iron pan (treated of class so no oil), permit it fry upward and served...i make my own mustard/horseradish sauce and at that place is always enough left for bubble and squeak...if non, it is unproblematic to make...HAPPY ST. PATRICKS Mean solar day
12/21/2004
The most of import ingredient is missing here. Add rutabaga (cut upwardly like the potatoes) at the same fourth dimension equally you add the cabbage. Mash them like the potatoes with butter on them.

10/14/2010
My corned beef came out perfect using this recipe as a guideline, cheers for sharing!!
03/17/2008
This is a family favorite. I have made it several years in row for St. Patrick's day. The just changes I make to this recipe is adding 2 tsp. each of pickling spice and basis mustard. I too add iv-6 cloves of garlic peeled & halved with the meat and onions in the beginning. When taking the onions out the cut up exist careful! They are filled with boiling water!
02/23/2010
This recipe is so like shooting fish in a barrel and the meat comes out so tender. At starting time I idea that boiling the meat would make it tough.........I was wrong.
01/03/2011
Tasty
03/25/2010
I looked this upwardly just to refresh my retentivity, but had never put onions in the dinner before. Boy were they an comeback, so skilful! As was the dinner.
03/twenty/2010
skilful recipe. although a little history.....corned beef dinners aren't authentic ireland.....they are american.....adopted by the irish immigrants in new england. But it's a delicious recipe notheless.
04/14/2007
So easy and delicious! Information technology's a keeper!! Thanks
03/23/2006
Very skillful and and then easy. I also added the seasoning pack that came with the meat. You lot do need a really big pot for this.
03/eighteen/2006
All I tin can say is WOW! Idea my corned beef was good before, tried this recipe because information technology seemed so unproblematic - and my family can't stop talking about information technology. Invited more guests than I entended to, and then had to melt a really big batch. Give thanks goodness a few couldn't brand it and I had plenty leftovers for more guests the next day (our 2nd St.Patricks dinner). Now all the kids are asking, "Do we accept to wait another whole year for more"? Mayhap not 'cause I'm thinking of trying to brine my own beefiness, so we won't have to wait. DO TRY IT!!!
03/23/2008
This was not bad, I boiled my beef two hours in the morning, then a hour before dinner, layer the cabbage, beefiness, and potatoes, and boiled for 45 more minutes, perfect.
04/12/2010
Now this came out great! Very tender and moist! I could not find the small potatoes I wanted, just just cut up larger ones.
03/22/2009
Yum Yum! Great comfort food - only like mom used to make. One tip: If you lot added the spices from the package, you tin can strain the broth through a metal mesh-type strainer so you won't be getting a mouthful of those footling seeds!
03/10/2014
I made this for my in-laws for St. Patrick's day final twelvemonth and it turned out amazing. I did everything right to the recipe. It as well made the house smell great for the adjacent couple of hours
03/10/2004
Wow, very tasty and fairly easy. The key to this recipe is to having a large enough pot when yous commencement.
11/26/2008
Wonderful! I added garlic and pickling spice.
03/31/2009
PERFECT! Every year when I make this something is not quite cooked or something is over cooked...with this recipe everything was simply right!
01/08/2012
We made this with ham and it was great!
03/28/2009
I likewise add a rutabaga, cut into one inch pieces, at the same time as the carrots.
03/31/2013
Excellent basic recipe! I prefer more spices, in addition to the seasoning pack. I add bay leaves, minced garlic, peppercorns, celery seed & a good dose of vinegar. Yum! Depending on the size of your roast, you'll need to adjust the cooking time---one size does non fit all.
03/23/2006
Good recipe - will probably come dorsum to this recipe, at some indicate in time - merely non something I "tin can't look" to try over again. I personally prefer corned beef that'due south been boiled for hours, then broiled in a brown sugar/dijon mustard glaze - then this boiled-only version was a fleck bland for me. (I wound upward adding table salt to my dinner plate to perk it up a bit...) The corned beefiness was surely tender - the potatoes, carrots & cabbage were all fine, also. My partner thought the meal was good - not anything out of the ordinary, but good. Similar I said, I think this is an okay recipe - it's just not a "stellar" ane.
09/20/2008
Crawly. My family usually does not like cooked cabbage, but they loved this.
02/fifteen/2012
I besides utilize the spice packet or a combination of peppercorns, garlic and pickeling spices. My mother used to add an actress step; after the corn beefiness was done and cooled slightly she would brush ane side with mustard, sprinkle on a little dark-brown sugar and place under the broiler until the carbohydrate melted and formed a thin glaze.
03/13/2010
Yummy. I used the spice packet equally well and threw in a few cut up parsnips for expert measure. My mother never fed me parsnips and I establish out when I was older that they're really good. I've read where people put a tin can of beer in with the water and brisket but I personally don't find that necessary at all. We serve this with a hot mustard recipe from the cookbook 'Applehood and Female parent Pie'. It's an amazingly delicious mustard recipe with a adept boot to it. Thanks for posting this recipe.
03/23/2010
it is ok.... just really but b/c corned beef has such a distinctive flavor. Next time I will use some sort of brine to boil information technology in. I idea information technology needed more than of something.
03/20/2012
I made this recipe because we are moving, and my dutch oven and crockpot are packed. The meat and veggies came out perfect. I was pleasantly suprised as to how tender the meat was. I did add together a canteen of beer to the pot for some extra flavor. Will make this recipe again.
03/24/2006
I halved this recipe, as information technology was just for my husband and myself, and it still fabricated a massive amount of food. Luckily, it tasted so practiced that it all got eaten upwardly in record time anway. I followed the directions pretty much exactly, except that I cooked the potatoes downwardly in the broth with everything else instead of on meridian of the cabage.
03/20/2008
I idea this recipe was very proficient. My brisket was considerably smaller, so I didn't add as many vegetables. The corned beef was super-tender, and the vegetables were merely right.
01/16/2010
This came out perfect. I didn't change annihilation simply my pot was on the smaller size. I got information technology all to fit in it. I will go along this one forever. Thanks to your swell grandmother from Ireland!
05/05/2013
I followed the recipe except I don't take a big pot so I only slow cooked it for 6 hours and at the last 40 minutes i added the vegetables. Information technology came out perfect, I used the spice packet the corned beef brisket came with and so I didn't accept to add annihilation extra or alter anything, My husband admittedly loved it, I volition definitely be cooking this recipe once again. Thanks for posting it.
03/16/2012
I've been making this recipe for 35 years. My family doesn't similar the spices in the cabbage so I put the seasonings in a tea ball so we get the flavor but not the seeds in the cabbage!
07/28/2007
I'chiliad certain this is the traditional Irish manner to cook corned beefiness but was looking for something with much more flavour. It was moist but utterly blahh.
03/21/2006
like shooting fish in a barrel and excellent! I also added the spices included in the beef brisket pack. I strained the goop and threw out the sometime onion. Then added fresh veggies, plus celery.
03/20/2010
Smashing!! Definitely add together spices, this final layering part makes the cabbage perfect. I am making this now....almost done. Second fourth dimension cooking it. Worth the wait.
02/13/2007
Sounds like a winner... merely what I needed

03/08/2012
my mothers mother made this and my mom made information technology for us and i have been making this pretty much the same fashion for 35 years its awsome i add a home made chicken broth that i make and freeze all the time rlly makes alot of flavor happy st pats day
04/29/2006
My cousins from Ireland loved it. They were impressed that we could duplicate some of their favorite dishes even though they say it wasn't exacly like home. Just I think they were lying. They certain scarfed it up with no leftovers. Not bad mail.
11/27/2006
I loved it basicly this Irish meal in a pot was very adept I love vegetables and this dish did non dissapoint me. I boiled it in the crock pot for 5 hours and it was no reason why Danny boy loved it. Can't wait to try this one again
03/25/2008
YUM!! Came out so much meliorate than my feel with a crock pot. Meat was then tender and veggies were cooked to perfection. This is the recipe I volition utilize from now on. Delish!
09/26/2006
Just like what my female parent used to make when I was a child. Because this is a large repast I gave a few of my friends "care packages". They gave me back my bowls at the end of the night in an endeavor to have them re-filled. My other half gave this meal an 8. Very very easy to brand, simply something you must start early in the day. If I was to change annihilation near this recipe, I would add together more carrots. For those who thought this repast was a bit bland, information technology is the fashion it is supposed to gustation. I have known many people who add vinegar to their plate for taste (I hate the stuff then but use a bit of elementary salt). I was requested to make this again on St. Patty's Day by i friend and asked for the recipe from another. I will defiantly brand once more. Thank you lot.
02/02/2015
This was an awesome recipe. The corned beef was tender and the other veggies complimented it and then well. Yummy!
03/02/2008
Everyone raves that this is the best boiled dinner ever! I also like to make it with Ham. (bone in shoulder picnic mode) this adds great flavor!
02/17/2010
good recipe, though i seriously doubt that it was your grandma's from Republic of ireland. maybe Irish grandma from America. I am first generation and we NEVER had corned beef. that's an American thing. Irish ate smoked (pork shoulder) barrel, never corned beef. Merely still, excellent recipe which pleases my dad (2nd generation, Chicago Irish). Always take to make both!
03/xviii/2007
The men in my family attacked this dish! It almost caused a riot. I found this to be succulent and uncomplicated. I used an actress large pot and information technology turned out perfect.
02/02/2008
My husband and all his buddies become crazy over this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
03/17/2007
Oh my goodness, so then good. Nosotros used a smaller brisket than called for, and used babe carrots. I likewise put the seasoning package in the h2o, and put the potatoes in the water and the cabbage on meridian. Thanks for the amazing recipe! We won't wait for St Patty's Day to make information technology once again!
03/16/2005
This is the manner I have ever cooked this dinner, it is simple and classic old time slow cooking. An added avantage is that it pretty much cooks itself although information technology will be the melt getting the compliments. Information technology doesn't get any better than that.
03/fifteen/2015
Very tasty but as Irish as spaghetti and meatballs! They don't eat corned beef in Republic of ireland!
03/20/2006
This was easy and tasty. The vegetables could accept used a fleck more than flavor, but withal tasted overnice and weren't overpowering. I will probably make this again--for St. Patrick'due south Day adjacent year.
03/17/2008
Thank you so much Ann for this recipe! I take never been able to go the timing of all the components of a boiled dinner to work. Your recipe did it for me! No mushy potatoes (I used ruby potatoes because that'south what we like), no overdone cabbage, no soggy carrots, and the brisket was perfection! I added the spice packet that came with the corned beefiness and some actress caraway seeds. Divine! Cheers again.
01/16/2007
My family loves this simple meal, in a pinch sometimes I volition use kielbasa or smoked sausage as a meat substitute
10/27/2007
And so simple, information technology was perfect exactly as described. It even got a cocky proclaimed cabbage hater to need more!
02/17/2005
i take to say this is the all-time recipe i have tried ,since i have been in canada.this is the proper manner to cook corned beef and cabbage, for become all those extra ingredents people add. this is home cooking thanks peggy
03/19/2005
absolutely delicious! so like shooting fish in a barrel. it made our st. patricks 24-hour interval party merely perfect.
03/12/2013
A groovy start to proficient recipe. I messed with it since I've made Corned Beef before. Here's my take: Added i/ii a canteen of Guinness Stout to the cooking liquid.(from another reviewer) Washed the meat (significantly reduces amt. of cream scum to skim) Added spice parcel + caraway seeds (ane/2 tsp) and thyme (i tsp, at terminal ane/2 hour cooking). Propose taste broth earlier adding veggies. It may demand salt. I removed the meat from the stock and coated with bread crumbs (another recipe) but constitute it didn't add annihilation to the dish. Won't do again. Suggestion from mother to add butter & salt & pepper to veggies after they are cooked.
12/06/2005
Prissy and elementary. Not overpowering like so many others. And not the sweet icky brown sugar version!
09/28/2009
Awesome and easy. Really need a minimum of v lbs of corned beef for my family.
03/18/2007
excellent. this is a keeper
03/16/2008
This is almost identical to the wonderful recipe my Norwegian mother used to make. The only difference was that she added peppercorns and a couple of whole bay leaves. This was one of my favorite babyhood dishes, and I'm making it right now.
03/xx/2006
My husband fabricated this for dinner and everyone LOVED it. Since they have all been to Republic of ireland, I gauge you can say this tastes authentic!
05/15/2014
Added fennel and some other spices made it a great dinner and leftovers to make soup. The kids fifty-fifty loved it!
03/04/2016
Really delicious simply gave 4 stars bc cooking time is too long. In my area it is impossible to find a 5lb corned beef so I got one 2lb and ane 3lb one. The 2lb one was done afterward most 2 hours cooking time (on meridian of the initial humid) and the 3lb was washed later on 2.v hours cooking time (on superlative of initial boiling). This is an hour deviation from the mode information technology was written. I advise checking after an hour and a half and ever half hour subsequently. The meat should exist piece-able simply soft-- def non shredded. Also pro height- Corned beefiness SHRINKS. A lot. When figuring out how much to buy, assume it volition shrink by 50%. Yes it'southward a huge scam-- but a tasty 1.
03/18/2007
Delicious! I added ii large onions and information technology was perfect. I as well used the peppercorn seasoning that came with the corned beef. It was bully (but non as great every bit my mom's, of course). :D
03/23/2014
You can't miss with this one. One of my family's favorites! To save time and make it admittedly tender and delectable, use a PRESSURE COOKER. You tin can halve the time, and the fatty layer scrapes correct off. Fantastic.
04/07/2005

08/21/2005
I was nervous to try a "boiled dinner" simply this was great! Directions were easy to follow and it really fabricated a great meal!
12/12/2012
Like other reviews I put the finished brisket nether the broiler a few moments after covering with some mustard and brown carbohydrate to let it caramelize. Yum!
03/22/2014
Nosotros institute it bland, even cooked in stout. I added turnips, which was the only matter that seemed to retain some of its ain flavor, besides the meat. Everything came out a scrap mushy, though the meat was very tender. I combined the leftovers with garlic, more than onion, common salt, and kokosnoot milk (dairy allergy). Blended with the immersion blender and turned information technology into a tasty cream soup.
10/23/2012
I use brussel sprouts instead of cabbage, my family unit likes these better. I too put in a turnip and employ russett potatoes with half a dozen pepper corns.
10/21/2006
I have only been in America for a few months so don't know what Irish potatos are. My mother-in-law had me just buy some red potatos and she is Irish and I loved this dish. Give thanks you so much.
03/20/2018
I have never made corned beef and cabbage before, but I volition again! This was fabled. I started cooking it on the stove for 5 hours and added the potatoes and carrots for the last xxx minutes.. And then, i put it in our ho-hum cooker for 3-4 more. The meat was incredibly tender and the vegetables were perfect. The only changes I made were to cut off most of the fatty and I added 2 cloves of garlic.
03/15/2015
Very skillful recipe. I added a little garlic forth with the rest of the ingredients, but left the residual of this recipe unaltered. A tip of the hat to traditional Irish cooking and flavor. I would like to betoken out that you may want to rent a backhoe, dig a fire pit, and prepare this in a caudron if you have i handy. I have a smaller kitchen and a standard sized stove, and fitting this all into my largest pot was a challenge.
03/17/2014
Delicious!! I added the seasoning pack
01/07/2006
This was my first experience with corned beef brisket and it was great and so easy! My kids weren't fans, so more of an adult meal for my family.Information technology was wonderful with corn bread.
07/08/2007
I halved this receipe because my corned beef was only 2.75 pounds. It turned out ok, merely it was kinda bland, needed table salt and other seasonings. The simply matter was that it was kind of tough. Information technology didn't "autumn autonomously" like the receipe said. I'll try it once more though.
10/17/2007
This was pretty good. I used a iii lb. corned beef brisket. I also used baby white potatoes which were a picayune over done with xxx minutes. I will probably make this again - mayhap in a couple years. Corned beef is not something we regularly swallow just information technology was proficient. Thanks for the recipe. It is super like shooting fish in a barrel and pretty tasty. Also, I added the seasoning that comes with the meat to the h2o.
03/xix/2004
This recipe was not bad. I am non a big fan of really salty meats, so the corned beef was overpowering for me, I could only consume a small corporeality.(I didn't add any common salt..it comes salty). Nevertheless, the flavors of the vegetables were great. If I made it once more, I would add together celery stalks to it. The broth makes good gravy, too.
03/28/2017
I loved making this. It was perfectly moist and tender and I cook it as a traditional Irish dinner and the family loved information technology. I would suggest adding some garlic likewise as a piffling actress salt depending on which blazon of me
03/19/2018
I take been cooking my corned beef this way for 52 yrs. now and information technology has never failed me. I exercise add together the seasoning packet with the brisket from the commencement. The only affair I add different from this recipe is I add one tsp. of minced garlic from a jar. If y'all strain your spices out of the juice in your stew pot afterwards y'all take all your veggies and meat out the juice makes a wonderfully flavored dip as well every bit good spooned onto your potatoes. I always boil my regular pot roasts the aforementioned way after first searing them in a picayune bit of oil to seal in the juices and I flavour it as I'1000 searing it with table salt, pepper, powdered garlic, not garlic salt. Comprehend with water and boil until the meat is tender then add your carrots and potatoes, cook until tender. I employ more than whole onions in mine and exit them whole. So once I have my meat and veggies out I made a gravy with the juices left in the pot.
03/xviii/2007
This was fabulous!! I accept never tried corned beefiness before - I could never stand the way that information technology smelled - but this was a hit for everyone in my house. I boiled it for about 7 hours with 1 onion and one crushed garlic clove and the odour was astonishing. Thanks!!
04/09/2007
Very good, it seemed like I had way also many veggies though for the amount of meat the recipe called for.
03/xviii/2019
My married man loved it. I will definitely make this again!
03/08/2020
I made information technology and loved it yet I tweaked it boiled information technology in Guinness. it was FANTASTIC
